Two-thirds of New Yorkers want the Park 51 mosque and community center project to be relocated to a less controversial site farther away from Ground Zero, according to today's new Times poll. But if Newt Gingrich had his way, nobody would be able to build near Ground Zero, because it would be a battlefield memorial.

Gingrich said during a radio interview today, "I think the Congress has the ability to declare the area a national battlefield memorial because I think we should think of the World Trade Center as a battlefield site; this is a war." And if making the WTC a national park doesn't dissuade those religious hippies, then Gingrich thinks the federal government should step in: "The Attorney General of New York, Andrew Cuomo, could intervene because frankly he has the ability to slow it down for decades if he wants to."

Gingrich has been an outspoken anti-Park 51 advocate, but in calling for the battlefield declaration, he reveals who he really is: Carl Paladino.
