A pedestrian was fatally struck by a garbage truck in Chinatown last night, and authorities say he was dragged for several yards by the vehicle before its driver sped away.
Police were called to Canal and Centre streets around 9:30 p.m., where they found the 59-year-old victim dead at the scene. A witness told cops the man had been hit by a private sanitation truck heading east on Canal, and was dragged for several yards before dropping to the ground.
As of now, investigators have no information on either the name of the sanitation company or the identity of the driver, nor do they know whether the driver was aware of the man at all. A spokesperson tells us they're looking into it.
