A car with four 19-year-olds from Long Island crashed into a wall outside the famous Newport, Rhode Island mansion, The Breakers, early yesterday morning. Michael Canning, of Massapequa, crashed his Hyundai SUV at 1:38 a.m., just a mile from Salve Regina University. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove him from the wreckage and was taken to a hospital in Providence by helicopter, with injuries of broken ribs and internal bleeding.
Canning is in critical condition, and Newsday reports, "Christopher Wands of Port Washington has two broken legs, Christopher Connors of Garden City had a broken pelvis and leg, police said, and Ian Cadzin of East Rockaway had a broken leg. Wands, Connors and Cadzin also are at Rhode Island Hospital where their status was unavailable, hospital spokeswoman Ellen Slingsby said." All four are students at Salve Regina.
Police are investigating whether the car was speeding and whether alcohol was involved.
