Four high school football players were killed, and four others were injured, in a car wreck on the Garden State Parkway on Saturday morning. Two of the teens were ejected from the vehicle in the crash when their SUV flipped and rolled over several times; the eight boys, all from Mainland Regional High School, were on their way to a team breakfast to celebrate the start of football season.

The driver of the car, 17-year-old Casey Brenner, lost control as they approached a traffic jam in Egg Harbor Township, near Exit 38A in the southbound lanes, at around 11:45 a.m. Brenner, who was thrown from the car, as well as passengers Dean Khoury, 15, and Nick Conner, 16, died at the scene. Edgar Bozzi, 16, was also ejected from the tumbling car, hit by a passing Pontiac, and later died at Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center. New Jersey law stipulates that you can only drive more than one teen in your car when you're 18 or older.

The four other teens in the car were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. There is a Facebook group for the teens called “R.I.P Mainland HS Boys. Gone but never forgotten,” which has more than 21,000 likes so far, and includes hundreds and hundres of personal tributes to them: “We might be rivals on the field but brothers at heart,” wrote James Woolley.
