Four Rikers Island correction officers and an inmate were injured yesterday in a riot at the prison's George R. Vierno Center.

The fight broke out last night, and officials are still investigating what started it. The guards were treated at a hospital for exposure to pepper spray. "Last night there was a fight involving a number of inmates in a high custody housing unit at the George R Vierno Center on Rikers Island," a spokesperson for the Department of Correction told us in a statement. "Department staff responded within minutes and the incident was resolved shortly thereafter. No serious injuries have been reported and the investigation is ongoing."

In August, inmates at Rikers got into a massive brawl that lasted for over an hour; the riot was allegedly started by members of Dominican gang the Trinitarians, who were reportedly upset a rival gang wouldn't let them use a hot plate they needed to cook a grilled cheese sandwich. Eleven inmates were injured in that brawl, and five were left with serious injuries.
