The former police officer who bombed a subway entrance near Times Square earlier this summer is fit to stand trial. Joseph Rodriguez claimed that he found a suspicious bag at the 8th Avenue and 43rd Street subway entrance, directly people to safety and later being thrown by the blast, but police determined he actually set the bomb the day before retiring, due to September 11 induced stress syndrome. Rodriguez's lawyer pointed out that no one was hurt during the incident besides Rodriguez and the subway damage was minimal. Gothamist is certainly sympathetic to Rodriguez's troubles, but planting a bomb in midtown near a subway? We can see why the DA would want to make an example of him.
