A shooting broke out last night just before midnight in a Brownsville public housing complex as people were heading to a party. Five men suffered gunshot wounds to their legs and feet while a woman was pistol-whipped.
Community advocate Tony Herbert explained that a sixth-floor resident in a Howard Houses building had promoted a party on Facebook. NBC New York reports, "Some people who'd had previous conflicts with the party crowd showed up outside the Glenmore Avenue building, and bullets flew in the lobby as the teenage victims tried to run back inside, Herbert said. Some residents heard two quick shots, then several more, he said."
Herbert added, "Our concern is that the attitude, with these young people, is that this may now be an occasion for retaliation. We’re going to try to keep the peace.”
The victims, who were taken to different hospitals, are all expected to survive. 1010 WINS adds that all the victims, except one, have criminal records.
