An off-duty firefighter was arrested on Sunday after allegedly choking his girlfriend's 19-year-old daughter outside his Staten Island home. The NYPD says Michael McKay, 33, was charged with Criminal Obstruction of Breathing following the incident, which occurred in Midland Park shortly after 2:30 p.m.

According to the criminal complaint, McKay, an eight-year veteran of the FDNY, placed both of his hands around the woman's neck and "applied pressure," which impeded the girl's breathing. But the unidentified victim did not lose consciousness nor sustain any visible bruising to her neck. According to the complaint, the choking caused "annoyance and alarm." McKay was also charged with 2nd Degree Harassment.

So far it's unclear what sparked the fireman's alleged strangulation, which, it seems, is not uncommon.
