An FDNY ambulance driver fatally struck an 89-year-old man who was walking on the Cross Island Parkway in eastern Queens on Wednesday evening. Police say the driver was traveling southbound on the parkway in Bellerose Manor, near the Nassau County border at around 8:10 p.m. when the man tried to cross the road and the driver struck him in the passing lane.

When cops arrived, they found the three emergency medical personnel who had been riding in the ambulance tending to the victim. Other paramedics then took the victim to North Shore Manhasset Hospital. Doctors there pronounced him dead.

Police are withholding the dead man's name, pending notification of his family.

An hour earlier, in East New York, a hit-and-run driver killed a woman crossing a street in the crosswalk, with the right of way. Police say that Evedette Sanchez, 39, was crossing Louisiana Avenue at Flatlands Avenue when the driver of a dark-colored SUV made a right turn off of Flatlands, plowed into her, and kept going. Emergency responders found Sanchez in the road with head trauma. They drove her to Brookdale Hospital, and doctors there pronounced her dead.

Sanchez was a resident of Brownsville.

The NYPD is still investigating the crash.

The intersection where she was hit, the meeting of six-lane Flatlands and four-lane Louisiana, was the scene of 35 crashes last year that left nine people injured, one a pedestrian, according to police department data.
