A woman was struck and killed by the driver of a van as she crossed Elizabeth Street earlier today.
According to an NYPD spokeswoman, the victim, a woman in her eighties, was crossing Elizabeth Street at Kenmare Street a little after 1:30 p.m. when she was hit by the driver of a van.
Mary Chifo, the manager of the laundromat across the street, says the woman was crossing Elizabeth from west to east on the north side in the crosswalk, when the van, heading north on Elizabeth, struck her.
"They tried to revive her but she wasn't moving," Chifo says. "She had vegetables, and the vegetables fell out of her bag."
The NYPD spokeswoman said the van was turning, but could not give any other details on the incident.
The victim was transported to Downtown Hospital and later pronounced dead. Her name is being withheld pending family notification.
The NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is currently investigating the crash.
