A 72-year-old man was attacked by a homeless woman wielding a pair of scissors while walking in Greenwich Village this week, according to police.

The NYPD says the man, identified by ABC 7 as Miko, was walking with a friend near 7th Avenue and 14th Street at around 7:42 p.m. on Thursday when a woman allegedly came up behind him and slashed him on the left side of his neck with a pair of scissors.

Miko told reporters that the woman kept trying to attack him, but was stopped by good samaritans who witnessed the insident. "Some gentleman came and took her wrist and twisted it, and I tried to kick out the scissors," he told ABC 7. He was treated for a laceration at Bellevue Hospital, but his friend says his injuries could have been much worse. "She cut him like this much close to the jugular vein, so I mean if she cut him a little bit closer he'd be dead right now," she told the station.

Police eventually arrested Miko's alleged attacker, identified as 30-year-old homeless woman Alexis Smarts. She has been charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon—she was also reportedly taken to Bellevue hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
