A driverless Corvette struck and injured a woman while she got lunch in Midtown this afternoon when the car's automatic starter malfunctioned as it idled outside a parking lot.

The FDNY says they were called to the scene at East 56th Street near Madison Avenue at around 1:18 p.m. this afternoon, while the St. Patrick's Day Parade was underway a few blocks over. The Post reports that a yellow Corvette had been driven up to the entrance of a parking garage in the area when the owner, who was apparently not inside the vehicle, hit the automatic starter on his keys. The car then reportedly shot across the street and hit the pedestrian, who had just purchased her lunch at a Chop't in the area.

The woman was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital. The driver blamed the parking garage attendants for the accident. “Maybe [the parking attendants] didn’t put the emergency brakes on,” he told the Post. “[The attendants] had it on auto control.”

The NYPD did not immediately have information for us regarding the incident.
