A private bus headed to Atlantic City crashed into a light pole in Sheepshead Bay. The 1987 Omnibus had been traveling west on Avenue U, but crossed into the eastbound lane yesterday evening and then crashed. The 66 year old driver and owner of the bus, Clyde McPhater, died from serious injuries. The police suspect he may have had a heart attack.

Democratic district leader Lew Simon's group, Good Government Regular Democratic Club, had sponsored the trip (Simon was aboard). One passenger said that they had started to the trip with a prayer, "Everybody said a little prayer that we get there. 'Just get us safe and let everyone win a lot of money and have fun.'" Twenty-six of the 42 passengers went to hospitals for their minor injuries.
