A man apparently lost control of his Honda Accord while driving through the Bronx shortly before 1 a.m. this morning and crashed into a building on Overing Street at the corner of East Tremont Avenue. The unidentified 49-year-old driver died in the accident, but his female passenger survived and is in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital. "They took the guy out," witness Lincoln Raby tells the Post. "A firefighter yelled ‘he’s gone! he’s gone!’ Then one of them shouted back, 'how about the other one?' They said, 'she’s got a pulse.' "

Another witness tells NBC New York he heard an explosion but "we didn't hear no breaks, no skid marks on the floor, nothing. He went right through the building. That's a brick wall. He had to come pretty fast." The two-story building, which has retail businesses on the first floor and residential units on the second floor, was evacuated pending a stability assessment from the Department of Buildings.

It's unclear what exactly caused the crash, and the investigation is ongoing, but the NYPD says there is "no apparent criminality at this time."
