An upstate man has been arrested for failure to yield after fatally striking a senior citizen with his car yesterday afternoon, according to police.

Cops say that they responded to a call about a pedestrian struck at the intersection of York Avenue and East 89th Street shortly after 3 p.m. When police arrived on the scene, they discovered an unconscious and unresponsive woman, later identified as 73-year-old Blanca Pagan who lived on East 87th Street with trauma to her body. EMS took her to New York Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad revealed that Pagan was in the crosswalk when the driver of a white 2013 Chevy van traveling south on York Avenue attempted to make a right turn onto East 89th Street and hit her with his car. The driver, identified as Pjerin Gjerji, a 48-year-old man from Yorktown Heights, remained at the scene. He was later arrested and charged with failure to yield and failure to exercise due caution.
