Dozens of people scaling the Brooklyn Bridge caused some alarm this morning, prompting speculation there was a political protest or a classic German stunt unfolding. But according to the NYPD, the startling scene was merely a training exercise for its emergency service unit.

An NYPD spokesperson said that the officers were training to perform difficult rescues.

"Our emergency service units have to go to extremes sometimes to go into high buildings and bridges in order to practice what they have to do in reality," the spokesperson said.

The officers were reportedly on their way down by 11:15 a.m., after spending what seems like an hour on top of the bridge during a small snowstorm.
