A 28-year-old East Harlem man was killed while riding an illegal dirt bike through the neighborhood yesterday around 12:30 p.m. Police say Shamel Jefferson was headed north on Third Avenue in the left lane when a driver ahead of him turned left onto East 105th Street. According to police, Jefferson tried to change lanes but collided with the rear side of the car, fell into oncoming traffic, and was run over by a truck.
One witness says Jefferson was doing a wheelie when the fatal crash occurred. "He was wheeling," Jose Luis Jarra, 34, tells DNAinfo. "He was going about 20 or 30 miles." Jefferson was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other drivers involved in the crash remained at the scene and no arrests have been made. The NYPD says the investigation is ongoing.
