After serving 20 days of his 30-day jail sentence, Dharun Ravi was released from the Middlesex County jail. The Star-Ledger reports, "Wearing a dark blue shirt and khaki pants, Ravi, 20, of Plainsboro walked out of the building with defense attorney Steve Altman's arm around his shoulder." Ravi also appears to have grown a beard.

Neither Ravi nor his lawyers spoke to the media. It was announced yesterday that Ravi, who was convicted for bias crimes after spying on his Rutgers roommate Tyler Clementi and his male guest in 2010. Clementi, who was gay and had recently come out, later killed himself by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, and prosecutors had portrayed Ravi as being homophobic, while his lawyers simply said he was stupid.

Ravi will not be deported back to India. Judge Glenn Berman decision to give Ravi a 30-day sentence—versus the 10 years he was faced with—apparently influenced federal Immigration authorities not to pursue deportation.
