Firefighters who put out a burning car fire on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway early this morning made a shocking discovery after they extinguished the fire: an unidentified woman's body.

Police say firefighters responded to a call about a burning car in the center lane of the westbound BQE at about 4 a.m. this morning. After firefighters put out the fire in the burning Infiniti G35 sedan, which was facing east despite being on the westbound side of the highway, they discovered the burnt corpse of the woman in the passenger seat.

The NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident, and the medical examiner will determine the woman's cause of death. A police spokesperson told Gothamist there were no updates into the investigation since the discovery of the body this morning.
