The city is finally hit with almost freakishly cold weather, and because our winter had been so mild up to this point, it's been catching up off guard. With stories about people freezing to death, Gothamist would like to remind everyone what your building's temperatures should be:
- When the temperature drops below 55 degrees between 6AM-10PM, inside temperature should be at least 68 degrees.
- When the temperature drops below 40 degrees between 10PM-6AM, inside temperature should be at least 55 degrees.
Call 311 if there are problems, and here's more information about what to do with your building's heat from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development. The Red Cross suggests that if your home loses heat, seal the doors and windows and keep everyone in the same room; plus, they recommend to dress in layers and wear boots, gloves and a hat. Gothamist heartily agrees and says your fears of looking like a shapeless blob with later hat-head are small next to the possibility of frostbite.
The Post's Steve Cuozzo sings the praises of Hale and Hearty Soups. Gothamist imagines an uptick in thermal underwear sales, especially has there's more snow in offing. Our recommendation: Stay in tonight and make some hot chocolate, watch some TV or a DVD, listen to some music (a favorite cold weather song is Ray Charles and Betty Carter's "Baby, It's Cold Outside"), or research a trip to the sun.
Are you staying in or braving the cold?
