NYPD officers arrested a man they believe burglarized a house in Jamaica, Queens yesterday afternoon. The suspect allegedly attacked an officer with a crowbar just prior to his arrest, and was shot by two cops in his wrist and thigh.
According to police, Leighton Friday, 19, broke into a home on 142nd Street at around 1:10 p.m. yesterday, and cops heard a woman in the home screaming for help when they arrived on the scene. "I heard the door slam, the drawers open, the closet doors start opening,” the unidentified victim told CBS News. “I realized it could be somebody in the house.”
When cops entered the home through an open rear door, they confronted Friday in the living room; he then allegedly hit one of the cops in the head with a crowbar.
The NYPD says two officers fired their guns at Friday, with bullets striking him in the left wrist and left thigh. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, along with the officer he attacked, who was also in stable condition and was treated for minor injuries.
Friday, a resident of Queens, has been charged with two counts of burglary, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief.
