Police are searching for a group of people apparently seen transferring M16 rifles between two mini vans on Staten Island this afternoon.
Four men and a woman were photographed transferring the possible weapons in a parking lot in Midland Beach, the Post reports. A witness sent the photo to police, who are currently searching for the suspects involved.
Police are also checking with local paintball facilities in the event that the weapons are merely paintball guns.
Possibly relatedly, machine-gun wielding police were barring the entrance to Gateway National Recreational Area, Fort Wadsworth this afternoon, the Staten Island Advance reports. Traffic was also backed up along West Shore Expressway and the New Jersey-bound Korean War Veterans Parkway as police checked cars leaving the borough at the Outerbridge Crossing.
