A 4-year-old boy was hospitalized on Friday morning after his father accidentally shot a hole in the roof of their Lower East Side home, causing a portion of the ceiling to fall on him, police said.

The father accidentally discharged the rifle in the Vladeck Houses on Jackson Street around 10:38 a.m., police said, reportedly while cleaning it to prepare to go hunting. A piece of concrete from the ceiling tumbled downward and struck the child. He was taken to Lower Manhattan Hospital for observation but was ultimately uninjured.

The 50-year-old father had a permit for the gun, and has not been charged.
