Yesterday afternoon, the 20-year-old daughter of former mayor Rudy Giuliani was arrested for allegedly stealing five cosmetics items from a Sephora store at Lexington and East 86th Street. Caroline Giuliani, who was allegedly caught by store employees and surveillance cameras, was taken into custody at the 19th Precinct stationhouse. A Daily News source says, "She was caught red-handed. She knew it and didn't act out... She kept her head low and you could see her eyes were tearing up."

The Post has details after she was caught by store security: While wearing a purple NYU shirt, the Harvard University student "handed over her ID and said, 'I'm an actress,' a police source said. When asked if she was related to the former mayor, she replied, 'Yes, I'm his daughter.'" Then the police came in and took her to the station. After a few hours, she was issued a desk appearance ticket (her next court date is August 31) and was escorted out by her mother, Donna Hanover, as well as her attorney, white collar lawyer Michael Bachner whose other clients include...Rudy's (former?) BFF Bernard Kerik.

Apparently Sephora called the precinct to say they would not press charges; an employee told the News, "We were watching her on camera. She was stealing mad stuff." (Mad stuff like "Dior skin primer, Bliss moisturizer and a hairnet," found in her pocket.) Bachner told reporters, "Caroline is a lovely young woman; however, it would be inappropriate for me to comment on her matter while it is in the legal process... We are not making any further comment." The Manhattan DA's office must decide whether to charge her; a spokeswoman said, "Once we review the case, we will decide whether or not to file a criminal complaint."

According to the Wall Street Journal, "First-time offenders' cases are often simply put on track to dismissal, if they commit no other offenses." The News reports that Caroline Giuliani had been interning for movie producer Lynda Obst, who said, "She is one of the smartest, most remarkable girls I know. This is one of those silly young girl things."

As for Rudy Giuliani, he was not seen at the precinct and it's believed that he and his children are estranged (he sat far away from his ex at Caroline's high school graduation). His spokesperson issued a statement, "This is a personal matter and Mayor Giuliani asks the media to respect the privacy of his daughter at this time.”
