A cab driver struck and killed an elderly woman in Little Italy on Saturday afternoon.

According to NYPD, the woman, who was 80 years old, was crossing Broome Street at Centre Street when she hit by a taxi driver making a left turn onto Broome.

Police said the unnamed woman sustained severe head trauma and was taken to New York Downtown Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The driver, 44-year-old Bouchouata Miloudi, of Brooklyn, was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care.

While traffic-related deaths in New York City fell to a new low in 2018 (to a total of 203), there's been a rise in fatalities this year. 75 people have died from traffic-related injuries so far in 2019—compared to 60 people this time last year—according to NYPD spokesperson Sergeant Jessica McRorie.
