A woman was struck by an Access-A-Ride van while crossing a busy Chelsea intersection last night. Though she was pinned under the vehicle, a number of good Samaritans were able to lift the van off of her.
Witnesses say the unidentified victim was struck at 14th Street and 6th Avenue at around 8:19 p.m. yesterday. CBS 2 reports that the van hit her while she was in the crosswalk, and may have run through a yellow light. Bystanders immediately ran to her aid. "It was a great heartwarming moment, though, for New York because everybody just swarmed to help, and they lifted this vehicle," one witness told the station.
One tipster sent us a video from the aftermath. "One of those access-a-ride buses hit a woman and dragged her through the intersection of 14th street and 6th ave, heading westbound," he told us in an email. "He was stopped in front of the subway station, I heard a woman was underneath the van, and that 'a bunch of big men' came and lifted the van, but she was in bad condition." You can hear witnesses describe the incident below:
The victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital in serious but stable condition.
