The rapper Busta Rhymes was arrested on assault charges yesterday after allegedly throwing a protein drink at an employee at a Chelsea gym. You will not find any "Busted" Rhymes puns in the below recount, so don't even ask. Please content yourself with the headline.
The 43-year-old rapper, whose real name is Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr., allegedly hurled a container of Lean Body protein drink (strawberry) at a front desk worker employed at Steel Gym on West 23rd Street following a heated dispute around 8:30 p.m.
Police say the bottle hit the worker in the back of the head, though no serious injuries were reported. The bottle-throwing was apparently the result of a spat that was initially sparked on Tuesday, after the rapper tried to bring a cameraman into the gym to document his workout routine, the Daily News reports. The employee told him this would not be allowed.
Busta returned on Wednesday to buy a bottle of water and the soon-to-be-weaponized protein shake. The employee, with whom the rapper historically had not gotten along, told him to leave.
“Things got heated. Busta splashed water on him and the employee threw water back. Busta’s security got between them,” one witness told the tabloid. "The cops came and (the employee) kept changing his story."
Others confirm that the two have had a long-simmering feud, and that the shake incident was only its inevitable culmination.
In 2008, Busta was sentenced to 10 days of community service after pleading guilty to assaulting a fan, assaulting his chauffeur, driving with a suspended license and DUI.
