A fire in the Flatlands destroyed six storefronts in a strip on Flatbush Avenue around 1 a.m. on Sunday, and raged for over three hours before about 140 firefighters were able to put it out. Investigators say the fire started at a Chinese restaurant and quickly spread down the block to other businesses, including a popular bagel shop. Dave's Bagel Shop's former owner, Bruce Benkel, told the Daily News, "I'm really stunned. You know these things can happen, but you never think they will. It was always my worst nightmare as a business owner."
There were no reports of any injuries, and the owner of a damaged hardware store said he would be able to clean up and get back in business. Adam Butrico had lost his store across the street in 1997 when the building collapsed, and said, "My first reaction was, 'Oh my God! This happened again!'" But he praised the firefighters for their hard work. "The firefighters did a great job...You can't beat the FDNY."
