A 53-year-old dog walker was found dead in the stairwell of a Brooklyn apartment building, and it's believed he died because the dogs "overpowered" him in the stairwell.

Police say that officers responded to a call about an unconscious male inside 15 Carroll Street, in Red Hook, around 5:22 p.m. yesterday. EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The Post reports, "The 53-year-old victim was leaving the building where the two dogs live on Carroll street near Van Brunt, just after 5 p.m. when cops believe the canines pulled or tripped the man, causing him to fall down the stairs and fatally hit his head."

The dogs are a pit bull and a mixed breed.

"A couple who answered the door at the Red Hook apartment declined to comment Thursday night, as a dog inside barked once in the background," according to the Daily News.
