A middle-aged couple was found dead in a Greenpoint hot tub this weekend, and investigators say they discovered a gallon of vodka at the scene that was almost empty.
The Daily News reports that the bodies of the victims, 66-year-old Alicia Wieczorkiewicz and 58-year-old boyfriend Jacek Crockiewitz, were discovered in the hot tub at around 1:50 p.m. on Sunday. According to authorities, both bodies were found with their backs propped up against the side of the tub, which was still running. Investigators also found the cashed bottle of Tanqueray Sterling vodka nearby on the floor of the couple's apartment.
Authorities told the tabloid the medical examiner's office is investigating, though it is noteworthy that drinking alcohol before or during a hot tub soak can increase risk of dehydration and heat stroke. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests avoiding alcohol while using a hot tub; a 1991 study found that 38 percent of spa, jacuzzi, sauna or hot tub deaths were primarily due to alcohol consumption.
