The Brooklyn police officer who fell off a fire escape and cracked his skull while in pursuit of a suspect Friday night is recovering from his injuries. Officer Francesco Allevato, 23, fell 15 feet while climbing down a fire escape on Georgia Avenue near Dumont Avenue just around 9 p.m. Friday. “It could have been a lot worse,” said Fred Cordella, the father of Allevato's girlfriend.

Allevato, who has been on the force for two years, was treated in the intensive care unit at Kings County Hospital for a broken collarbone, a concussion and bleeding from his eardrum. Allevato had been chasing after 18-year-old Jesus Ortiz after police officers observed a marijuana sale. Oritz made them run to catch him, climbing up his building and across several roofs before climbing down. Ortiz, who has 10 prior arrests, was caught near the building by other officers, and charged with reckless endangerment, criminal trespass and drug possession.
