A 20-year-old student from the Bronx was killed late Monday night while defending his little brother from a pack of teens trying to bully him for 50 cents. Willmer Hernandez was shot three times in the abdomen after he stepped in to help his 16-year-old brother Stephen with the thugs. And now, a 19-year-old has been arrested and charged with the murder.
According to Stephen, the brothers were at a deli near their aunt's building on Mace Avenue in the Allerton section of the Bronx. "Some guys came up and asked us for 50 cents to buy something. We said: 'No,' and one guy came to go in my pocket, but I pushed him back and my [money] and my phone fell out of my pocket and they must have stolen it because later it was gone." Willmer then decided to step in:
My brother said, 'Leave my little brother alone!' The guy said, 'I'm not trying to hear that!' and pulled out a gun. I said, 'I'll give you what you want,' and he said, 'Give it up!' I can't remember if my brother was talking but there was no fight. They shot my brother. I don't know why. He said, 'I'm going to shoot!' and he shot my brother.
Willmer, who worked at Red Lobster and attended Borough of Manhattan Community College, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died. The brothers had gone to the deli to buy food for a trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, which was supposed to begin yesterday. Dasheem Campbell, 19, has been charged with the murder.
