Earlier this morning, a transformer exploded in the Bronx, causing a power outage in the Gun Hill section. One of the affected buildings in the area was Eastchester Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, and one of the patients on ventilators died, according to the Post.

Numerous patients had to be moved and one, a 49-year-old woman being kept alive by the ventilator, died. A Con Ed spokesperson told the Post the center's backup generator failed. The woman, 49, "was pronounced dead at the center, after the generator went out. Sources said there had been an order not to resuscitate her. 12 FDNY units took 37 patients, all in critical condition on ventilators, to area hospitals, with the last patient being moved shortly before 4 a.m.

About 4,000 customers were affected by the outage; power was back after four hours later at 5 a.m. Con Ed is investigating the outage.
