It's one thing to pay a paltry sum in exchange for a child's iPhone, but it's quite another to remove an 18-month old baby's earrings at her day care center. It's as if there's no more honor among thieves.

Police arrested 21-year-old Desire Santiago today after the toddler's mother contacted police on December 5, saying her daughter's $100 hoop earrings had been taken while under the Hunts Point Avenue center's care.

According to cops, surveillance footage shows Santiago removing the earrings from the pint-sized victim. She's been charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

Horribly, this trend of stealing jewelry off of children isn't terribly uncommon. Parents: To prevent theft, remember to adhere jewelry to your child's skin with rubber cement, or, when left unattended, hide the child under an old blanket, just as you would cover CDs left in your car. It's basic crime prevention.
