A broken rail has halted westbound LIRR trains between Jamaica, Queens and Penn Station, to the misery of straphangers heading home from work. Commuters trying to flee the city aren't in much better shape—eastbound trains are being cancelled, too.

From the MTA:

Westbound service between Jamaica and Penn remain suspended. There are some eastbound cancellations and delays of up to 20 minutes due to a broken rail in one of Amtrak East River tunnels. Far Rockaway and Hempstead Eastbound Trains are operating out of Atlantic Terminal. Amtrak crews are on the scene and expect to complete temporary repairs within the next 90 minutes.

As a (westbound) alternative, desperate passengers should take the E train at Jamaica or 7 train at Woodside to get to Manhattan. As for those heading east, well...the wait will no doubt be painful, but at least now you'll have plenty of time to smoke your e-cig!
