At 6 a.m. today, a fire broke out in a Flatlands apartment building, killing an 8-year-old boy and injuring four other people. According to WABC 7, "Fire trucks navigated their way on a plowed street, around at least one abandoned vehicle, to get to the building... An off-duty Department of Sanitation worker driving to work was alerted to the blaze by a screaming woman who ran out of the house." The FDNY admitted that response time to a Monday night five-alarm Queens blaze was hampered partly by abandoned vehicles.
