Box Truck Driver Fatally Runs Over Cyclist In Tribeca

A female cyclist was struck and killed by the driver of a large box truck in Tribeca Thursday evening. 48-year-old Chinatown resident Yan Jindee had been riding her bike when she was struck by the driver on the corner of Broadway and Walker Street just before 5:45 p.m. yesterday, police said.

According to the NYPD, the unidentified 38-year-old truck driver had been driving eastbound on Walker street when he attempted to make a right turn onto Broadway and crashed into Jindee. Emergency first responders rushed Jindee to NY Downtown Hospital, but she could not be saved. According to DNAinfo, the truck driver remained at their vehicle and was not arrested by the NYPD officers who arrived at the scene.

"I heard the sound, it was a loud sound,” Stephan Wolukawu, 46, told the Daily News shortly after Jindee was struck. “The truck was stopped and the lady was on the floor."

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed that no charges have been filed against the driver and an investigation of the crash is currently underway.

The deadly Tribeca collision is the latest in a week marred by cyclist injuries and death. On Monday, a Citibike rider suffered leg trauma after being run over by a truck in Midtown, while on Saturday a drunk driver slammed into a group of cyclists at a red light in Borough Park, dragging one woman under his vehicle. This summer, three cyclists were killed by drivers in collisions across Manhattan and Brooklyn.
