Verizon workers discovered a decomposing body in a Manhattan manhole early on Tuesday morning.
The NYPD says that officers responded to a 911 call just after 3:15 a.m. about a man who was found unconscious in a manhole on West 58th Street between 8th Avenue and Broadway. When they arrived, they found the body "in a state of decomposition," and EMS pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The workers had apparently noticed a smell. According to WABC 7, "The workers said the manhole is where they access telephone operations. While they say they'll sometimes discover a rat in the holes, they've never seen anything like this." They also noted that "lifting a manhole is a two man job, the covers weigh several hundred pounds and require a tool."
It's believed the body had been in the manhole for days. The medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.
