Current New School President and former U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey has reportedly been tapped to be the next chairman of the Motion Pictures Association of America (MPAA). Kerrey announced last year that he would be stepping down as head of New School in July 2011 for obscure reasons (though there was some controversy on campus over his involvement in the CIA's Operation Phoenix).

According to The Wrap, Kerrey has "won approval" of the governing board of heads of movie companies. Although there are no specific deals in place right now, one anonymous insider said the job was "his to lose" and the LA Times says Kerrey is expected to step down from the New School position this summer. Kerrey would be replacing Dan Glickman (who stepped down in January) in the more than $1.3 million a year role as chairman-CEO of the MPAA.

Lawrence O'Donnell, a friend of Kerrey's, said, "No one doesn’t want to talk to Bob Kerrey. He’s a very winning charming guy. He’s always had that going for him. Both communities respond to star power, and Bob Kerrey has star power." Of course, Kerrey did date Debra Winger, too.
