Last night, a "suspicious" fire broke out in a Bronx apartment building which left one man dead and seven others injured. The man who was killed in the fire, barber Juan Marte, 46, had long feared dying in a fire. "He had said he never wanted to die in a fire. We were talking about it after watching a story on the news [a couple months ago]. He didn’t want to be burned," said Ernesto Batista, a barber at the High Class Barbershop where Marte had worked the past four years. Marte, who was known as "Juan El Gallero"—Juan the Cockfighter—because he raised chickens for caged matches, lived in the building with his wife and two daughters, all of whom survived the fire.
