Another disturbing double murder occurred yesterday: Firefighters were at a Bronx building, 3404 Crescent Avenue, to respond to an apartment fire when they discovered a 32-year-old woman dead and a one-month-old baby girl unconscious inside. Firefighters tried to resuscitate the child (the Daily News has a haunting photo), but failed. Now it's believed that the fire was set to cover up the mother's murder.

It turns out that the mother died from stab wounds. The Post reports, "The woman had been stabbed repeatedly in the torso and arms, then dragged to a bathroom and tossed under a mattress, which was set ablaze, according to the FDNY and sources."

The baby, who was not stabbed, was found in the bathtub. Firefighters rushed her out and performed CPR on top of a car hood.

The FDNY says the bathroom was lit on fire. A Post source indicated "cops are looking to question the woman’s boyfriend... It’s unclear if that boyfriend is the baby’s father."
