In the middle of the week, a meteorologist commented that New York City hadn't received very much rain since March. Well, now we've received at least an inch of rain since yesterday, and the rain is going strong today. However, the rain brought a lesson with it - renovated hotels are susceptible to water damage and flooding, especially when they have a temporary roof. The Marcel Hotel on East 24th Street had to be evacuated when water gushed from tarps covering roof renovations and flooded into the rest of the building. A Canadian tourist rather cheerily told WABC 7, "The building is flooding so we're all being kicked out. We were rescued by some lovely New York firemen and we're off to a fancier hotel." Con Ed shut off the hotel's power and now the hotel is closed, with the Red Cross helping out with relocation of guests.
