An 81 year old man who was attacked in his Washington Heights apartment elevator died yesterday, making his mugger a murderer. The thief, in his 20s and about a foot taller than victim Jacob Gerstle, forced the man to his apartment, beat him, and stole a wallet and cellphone.
And the man who police arrested for an East Third Street building robbery-turned-sexual assault had also "robbed and molested" the woman's neighbor, too! John Hamlett was held without bail for the crimes: On April 16, he robbed and molested one woman, and then on April 29, he robbed her neighbor, only to return to the second apartment on May 3 to assault the tenant. The women ID'd him in police line-ups - plus he was seen using the two women's debit cards on surveillance cameras.
