Adult, 5-Year-Old Child Killed In George Washington Bridge Crash

Two people were killed in a car crash on the George Washington Bridge on Wednesday night, after an SUV driver reportedly "slammed into" the back of a box truck.

Around 8 p.m., the driver of a GMC Acadia with NJ plates was heading towards New York City on the upper level he hit the truck, which was stopped in traffic, according to the Port Authority. News footage and photographs show the damaged vehicle.

NBC New York reports, "One of the victims had to be extricated from a vehicle."

The SUV's driver, who was in his 30s, and a five-year-old passenger, were pronounced dead at Columbia-Presbyterian. Three others in the SUV, a woman in her 30s, a woman in her 70s and a one-year-old child, suffered injuries and were also taken to Columbia-Presbyterian.

Authorities have not released details about the victims' identities.

The span's upper levels were closed for hours during the investigation but re-opened around 2:30 a.m.
