A heat advisory is normally issued when the heat index, a combination of temperature and humidity, is expected to reach 100 degrees. The heat index may not reach 100 today but in this morning's forecast discussion the Weather Service was taking a less rigorous approach to today's weather misery:
"FEEL THAT IT IS PRUDENT TO ISSUE A HEAT ADVISORY FOR NYC TODAY. IT WILL FEEL LIKE A FURNACE OUT THERE NO MATTER HOW ONE SLICES IT."
The heat and humidity will end later today in a near repeat of last Friday's weather. There is a cold front upstate, this time stretching from Massena to Salamanca, that may provide us with a thunderstorm this afternoon and will usher in cooler, drier air for the weekend.
Speaking of weekend weather, this is Weather Weekend at Wave Hill in the Bronx. According to their website there will be a garden walks, weather-inspired art, improvised compositions on wind- and balloon-powered turntables, and an art project where you can make your own handcrafted movie. Whatever your outdoor plans are this weekend, the weather will be on your side.
