In 2014, Mayor de Blasio murdered area groundhog Staten Island Charlotte when he dropped her during a Groundhog Day photo-op. Now, it appears the groundhogs are seeking their revenge—a renegade rodent was spotted on the City Hall grounds yesterday:

The mayor is currently on vacation in Italy. It's unclear to what degree the timing of the trip was brought on by mounting groundhog-based panic in City Hall.
BREAKING: Sources say there's a groundhog loose at City Hall. Must have heard @BilldeBlasio was on vacation and figured it was safe

Groundhogs might look adorable, but a quick YouTube search suggests they are in fact vicious:
It's unclear whether City Hall is still under threat of a groundhog attack, and when pressed for comment, a spokesperson with the administration had "no idea" what was going on.
Trust no one.
Update 3:37 p.m.: In a statement, the Parks Department said they "cannot confirm the presence of a groundhog in City Hall Park," so obviously everyone is in on it.
