A three-month-old baby survived falling from a second story window in the Bronx Tuesday night. Police initially thought that baby Jakeina DuBose may have been thrown out the window by her 9-year-old brother, who was alone with her at the time—but police have now determined that the fall was an accident. It seems the boy had been left babysitting his little sister while their mother, Tayeka DuBose, was outside; he became frustrated at her crying, and held Jakeina out the window hoping that their mother would hear her screams and come home.
The incident happened just before 8 p.m. Tuesday night at the Edenwald Houses on 226th Drive. Baby Jakeina and her brother weren't actually the only ones in the apartment when it happened—two uncles and one of the uncles' girlfriends were also in the apartment, but they were looking after some of Tayeka's other five children at the time, and had explicitly left the 9-year-old in charge of the baby.
Jakeina suffered a fractured skull, but is in stable condition at Jacobi Hospital. No charges are expected to be filed against the boy. Workers from Administration for Children's Services have now taken away the other six children, three from each gender, from the home. According to the Post, Tayeka was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
