An 8-year-old boy died over the weekend after a driver struck him in Jersey City.

The boy, Jeremiah Grant, was reportedly crossing Christopher Columbus Drive near Grove Street at around 4:45 p.m. on Saturday when the 60-year-old driver, who was in a red Jeep Compass, ran into him. Jeremiah was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center and pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.

Witnesses told police the driver did not initially stop after hitting Jeremiah, but eventually came to a halt when a group of good Samaritans confronted him half a block away. "He said he didn't see the kid. That's what he said," witness Angel Alvelo told ABC 7. No charges have been filed.

Jeremiah was a member of champion double-dutch group the Honey Bees, and performed with them on an episode of The Tonight Show over the summer:

People reports Jeremiah had been walking home from a fundraiser with a few other members of the group when he was struck. One of his teammates set up a YouCaring fund in his memory to help his family:
