A 5-year-old boy was hit by a driver along Prospect Park West on Sunday, right in the vicinity of where 12-year-old Sammy Cohen Eckstein was killed in 2013.

Roark Bennett was struck at Prospect Park West and 3rd Street after he ran into the street against the light, the Daily News reports. He was thrown two car lengths, but was hospitalized with only minor injuries.

NYC lowered the default speed limit from 30 to 25 mph last year, in the wake of multiple studies showing that even five miles per hour can make a difference between life and death.

Other steps taken last year include the introduction of speed cameras near schools and the aggressive expansion of neighborhood slow zones along the city's deadliest corridors.

No criminality is suspected on the part of the driver.
