Firefighters have been fighting a 5-alarm fire at 3105 Bainbridge Avenue off East 204th Street in the Bronx. WCBS 2 reports, "Though firefighters arrived shortly after 3 a.m. to find only heavy smoke, it quickly turned into a conflagration. The fire could be seen for blocks, and smelled for miles."

There are 14 stores in the building, and many of them are destroyed. Fire Chief John Sudnik said, "Fire spread pretty quick because it got in the space between the ceiling of the store and the roof boards... It got too far ahead of us and we pulled our firefighters out for safety reasons," and the 200 firefighters were left to fight the fire from the outside.

The fire apparently started in the basement of a bakery that's under construction. As it happens, a bakery—the Bainbridge Bakery— in this same strip of stores was the scene of a 2-alarm fire in April; it's unclear if today's fire started there, too.
